Michelle Strange: A Tale of Two Hygienists presents this week’s TIPisode: quick and easy tips to keep you up to date and presented by the experts in the profession. Now, get ready for your unofficial TIPisode, this week brought to you by GC America.
Amber Auger, RDH: Hi, everyone. Amber Auger here, and I am so excited to be with you today. I am going to be covering a product from our friends over at GC America, and that product is called the MI Paste ONE. If you know me, you know that I love efficiency. So that’s why I’m so excited today to talk to you about this toothpaste that is phenomenal. I’ve really had amazing results chairside and in my own mouth with using the MI Paste ONE.
Let’s talk briefly before we dive into the MI Paste ONE about Recaldent. Recaldent is calcium and phosphate bound together by a casein protein, and that casein protein is often found in the milk proteins. So, if you’re familiar with the MI Paste line, you know if that patient does have a allergy [sic] to milk-based proteins, that it would be contraindicated for the patient.
But, when we look at the MI line, it has so many benefits to patients. First would be the anti-caries, anti-sensitivity, remineralization. It really utilizes the calcium and phosphate that’s bioavailable to drive fluoride for the remineralization.
So, essentially, when we look at a tooth, your tooth does not simply lose fluoride, right? It loses calcium and phosphate. That’s why if your patient has xerostomia, they’re not able to have calcium and phosphate. There’s not enough saliva to naturally cleanse their teeth. This is why xerostomia can be so destructive. This is also why if a patient has an acidic pH and is unable to balance that pH from the xerostomia, that is a high-risk caries patient.
So, really, we’re always looking for that liquid gold of the mouth, and of course, that liquid gold would be the natural saliva. And the reason it is liquid gold, again, is because your saliva naturally carries calcium and phosphate, which is going to give the tooth what it needs to prevent caries, what it needs to self-heal if you will.
So let’s talk about MI Paste ONE and why it’s different. Unlike other products from the MI Paste line, it’s not a two-step process. So it is phenomenal in the fact that convenience is compliance. Patients are more likely to do something that is easier to implement in their everyday routine. But the best thing about the MI Paste ONE is, yes, it’s easy to implement, but the science behind the product is absolutely superior.
So, when we look at the MI Paste ONE, how do we use it? How it’s recommended to be used is to brush on the teeth for two minutes and then not going to eat or drink for 30 minutes after. You’re doing this twice a day, morning and night. There’s no additional step.
The active ingredients in the MI Paste ONE is 1,100 parts per million of sodium fluoride, 5 percent potassium nitrate, which is going to have that anti-sensitivity effect.
Often what I hear is “Well, what’s the RDA on the product?” It’s less than 64 — it’s 64, rather, I’m sorry. The RDA is 64, which is less than the Sensodyne Repair and Protect.
When we look at the Recaldent, we have to remember that protection can actually last up to 96 hours in our patients. There’s not many products that I have found the science that confirms 96 hours of protection.
So, again, the benefit of the MI Paste ONE is the fact that convenience is compliance. It’s one step to reduce our patient’s risk of overall tooth decay.
Now, Doctor Pam went over the fact that not only does it have the availability to prevent tooth decay, but it actually will prevent the strep mutans from thriving in the mouth, so also periodontal effects on our patients.
Now, again, I think of that patient who’s using the aligners. And this probably a [sic] hot topic because I’m about to get mine, and many of my friends in the practice are doing aligners now because guess what? Why not perfect your smile while you’re wearing a mask in a global pandemic? I mean, now more than ever there’s no podium time for me. So what I am thinking myself is the fact that if we’re taking in and out those clear aligners, it allows such an environment for those strep mutans to thrive, right?
So the good thing about Recaldent — one of the good things of many things — is the fact that it’s also promoting the growth of the good bacteria. So, just like a probiotic effect where we want more good bacteria in the mouth, we know — and I won’t get too far into this — but 60 percent of the good bacteria in your mouth is linked to the bacteria in the gut. So, without the good bacteria in the mouth to fight off that negative bacteria, we can really have lack of homeostasis.
So the MI Paste ONE from the top. We’re going to brush on two minutes. Eating or drinking, we’re going to prevent that from happening for 30 minutes after use. You’re going to be brushing twice a day with it. There’s no additional step. A one-stop shop. Convenience is compliance. Gentle and efficient. Really great cleaning effect. There’s no SLS. Refreshing mint flavor there. Anti-caries, anti-sensitivity, rebuilds your enamel, anti-erosion, and whitening benefits.
So I don’t know what you’re waiting for. Go. Run! Get your MI Paste ONE. Didn’t mean to rhyme there, but I did. Your patients will truly love it, and I’m excited to see what else is coming down the line for our friends over at GC America and for the MI line.
As Doctor Pam alluded to in her segment, there’s some great new technology that’s going to be coming from GC America, so keep your eyes out.
Thank you again, everyone.
