Michelle Strange: A Tale of Two Hygienists presents this week’s TIPisode: Quick and easy tips to keep you up to date and presented by the experts in the profession. Now, get ready for your unofficial TIPisode, this week brought to you by Elevate Oral Care.
Gretchen Childe: Hi, everyone. Gretchen Childe here, Preventive Care Consultant with Elevate Oral Care.
Prevention for most patients and dental professionals means brushing and flossing well enough to prevent caries and gingivitis, perhaps even adding some fluoride and mouth rinses into the mix as well. Unfortunately, not everyone is effective at these preventive basics. Dentistry would be a much different profession if they were.
Here at Elevate Oral Care, we look at prevention from all perspectives. Prevention starts in your office in the form of debridement, mineralization products like fluoride varnishes, and silver diamine fluoride. This extends to the patient’s home in the form of prescription toothpastes and mouth rinses. We view these types of prevention as [indiscernible] doses of prevention in your practice and maintenance doses every day at home for patients.
When it comes to prevention, frequency often overpowers strength of one-time doses. This got us thinking about new perspectives for prevention. For example, how to make prevention a daily event without the patient thinking about it. For us, the search was on, and we didn’t have to look much farther than a company in Texas called SelenBio. This organization spent many years researching the benefits of selenium and their applications in various dental, medical, and veterinarian products.
They teamed up with Dr. Ben Amaechi at the University of Texas San Antonio to research the selenium additive SELDOX and how effective it can be when incorporated into everyday dental products. What they found is that SELDOX, a selenium-containing additive, works in dental restorative materials, preventive sealants, and primers to prevent bacterial growth on surfaces. More importantly, SELDOX did not get weaker over time. It doesn’t leach out like some antimicrobial products but rather works as a catalyst and stays in place for the life of the material.
SELDOX creates free radical oxygen that prevents bacterial growth at the surface of the material, any surface including the top and underside that’s adhered to the tooth. Also, since SELDOX is mixed into the material, if the material ever breaks — think about a pit and fissure sealant — the broken edge is just as protected as the original surface. That means a pit and fissure sealants with SELDOX brings a second layer of defense to your preventive procedure in the office. It keeps working at home for your patients, and they don’t have to think about it.
SELDOX is versatile enough it can be added to primers to help reduce secondary decay. It can be used under restorations, under orthodontic brackets, and anywhere a bond is placed. SELDOX can be incorporated into almost anything. Think about waterlines in your dental offices with SELDOX tubing. Cleaning water lines could be a thing of the past.
Here at Elevate, we’re happy to have partnered with SelenBio to bring some of these products to market including a pit and fissure sealant, a surface sealant, and primer.
